An interesting interactive infographic from the Guardian – some may say a morbid and grisly subject but to me this is a fascinating overview of a topic that is so much a part of life.
The infographic shows every cause of death registered in England and Wales since the Millennium (the past 11 years). The graphic is broken down into two sections:
How deaths have been registered in the 21st century so far which is a visual graph of coloured bubbles depicting such causes as cancer, respiratory diseases, digestive diseases, mental and behavioural disorders. Each bubble has a rollover which displays statistics such as cancer (being the biggest bubble) has been the cause of 1,686,133 deaths between 2001 and 2012.
You can then drill down into the information with: Number of deaths registered to this cause broken down by sex and year. Select your disease/illness/cause and you can see a detailed breakdown. For example mental and behavioural disorders as a cause has increased rapidly in the past three years as a worrying trend.
Simple and elegant interface
A great example of an excellent interactive infographic, see the full version here…
